LET’S CHAT WITH THE FAMOUS CROCHET ARTIST DESIGNER

1. Please, tell us a little about yourself and your designs.

Hi, my name is Andreia, I’m 28 and currently living in Portugal. I have a Masters Degree in Architecture but what I really love and want to continue doing is crochet. This past couple of years I’ve really been doing everything I can to make this business grow and thrive, and I think slowly I’m going where I want to be.

2. How long have you been crocheting?

I’ve been crocheting since 2015 and I taught everything myself through YouTube videos after seeing a friend making an amigurumi keychain. I immediately fell in love with the craft and it’s been a really fun journey.

3. Why crochet? What is it that interests you?

I’ve been interested in all sorts of crafts since a very young age. I’ve experimented with painting, clay and wood sculpting, needle felting… but crochet was the one craft that really clicked with me. When I was little I used to collect plushies so I guess now I can make my own little friends thanks to crochet and it’s the best feeling ever.

4. Where do you usually get inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes and goes like most artists, but in those moments when I feel the most creative, I manage to draw inspiration from almost anything.

Lately, I’ve been really inspired by animals and nature, I like to create new characters based on the seasons or events happening at the moment, but also based on pop culture like some of my favorite movies. I think inspiration can really come from anywhere you just need to be open to it.

5. Tell us about your happiest moments since you became an amigurumi designer?

There have been a lot of happy moments for sure, but most of them actually happened in 2020 which is kind of weird considering what a terrible year it was.

One of them was when I was invited by Amigurumi.com to be one of the featured designers in their Ami Along. I designed River and Rocco the Scout Raccoons for them back in July and it was such a great experience.

The second highlight of my 2020 as a crochet designer was right after that, as they were so happy with my work, they invited me to design two characters for their new book Zoomigurumi 10! It really made me feel like my work as a designer was finally being recognized and gave me a lot of inspiration and drive to continue on this path.

6. What is the most struggle that you have faced during your design career?

I would say my biggest struggle has been self-confidence and believing in myself and in my skills. The crochet community is already so big and filled with so much talent, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed by it and feel like you don’t have a place in it.

Once you’ve found your voice and unique style of doing things it does get easier, but that little voice of self-doubt can always make a comeback no matter how successful you are.

7. How did you start to be a professional designer and treat the hobby as a business?

In the first few years of my crochet journey I had already started thinking of this craft more like a business than a hobby, but not with the confidence and determination that I have now.

In 2020 I made changes in how I work, trying to be more proactive and productive, in order to see results in my business and it’s working. I’m inspired by a lot of makers and their success stories, so I try to learn from them.

8. What is your strategy to grow a design business? How did you start to promote yourself and which platform?

I started to promote myself and my work on Instagram as a lot of people. At first, I didn’t know what I was doing, and honestly, I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing most of the time. But as long as you’re happy with the content you’re sharing that’s a big plus.

My strategy is just to be consistent with my work, being the quality of my pieces or the quality of my pictures. And keep sharing them with the world on a number of different platforms.

It’s always best not to put all your eggs in one basket, as they say, and in order for your work to reach out to more people, you need to have it on display in different places. After that, there’s a lot of luck involved too, which is harder to control.

9. I saw that you have tons of sales on Etsy and other sales platforms, what you think is the main factor that leads to your success today?

I think the main factor in growing your sales and business success is really the quality of what you’re selling and showing it to the right audience. As I mentioned, the quality of your product and pictures will help you sell your craft as people buy with their eyes first. And then it’s all about finding that niche where your product fits best.

Once you’ve found and established these you just have to keep working for it to make it successful. Work is always the main factor, no matter what you’re trying to achieve.

10. You are famous right now, but I know that it would be a long story behind with all the effort and of course, luck! What is your advice for people who want to be a designer and live with a career?

I don’t really think of myself as famous so I’m always a bit overwhelmed when people look up to me and my work. I would say my biggest advice, which is what I’ve been telling myself, is to set goals for yourself and your business. Every step you take moving forward is in order to accomplish that goal. Once you have a clear idea of what you want it’s a lot easier to put in the work to make it a reality.
